Are Meryl Davis and Maksim Chmerkovskiy playing up the PDA for the cameras?

The chemistry between Meryl Davis and her "Dancing With the Stars" partner, Maksim Chmerkovskiy is palpable. Ever since they won the mirror ball trophy, they've also been very publicly affectionate. Are they really in love? Or are they just playing up a "showmance" because it benefits their careers?

According to a May 23 Hollywood Life report, it's a combination of the two. As an insider explained, public fascination with their relationship could potentially lead to increased career opportunities. "They are running with the PDA and allowing people to keep talking about their relationship being something more because it is getting them more and more opportunities and pay days."

This week, Davis and Chmerkovskiy had dinner at Manhattan's Tao Downtown where they were very touchy-feely with each other. According to the insider, "one example of this is going to Tao and getting everyone to talk about them and their night helps their wallets. Having them seen flirting gets Tao press and money and them press and money. It’s a win win."

However, E! News points out that the dancing duo were joined by eight others that night, including fellow pros Tony Dovolani and Val Chmerkovskiy. E! sources also report that the newly minted "DWTS" champs are just friends. "In truth, there is no romance there. They're good friends, but nothing more. The hype about it has been fun, but it's not real."

In a May 22 interview with Wendy Williams, Davis denied that she and Maksim Chmerkovskiy were dating. When Williams asked if she had a boyfriend, the Olympic gold medalist responded, "we like to keep the personal lives personal." The rumored couple also did not directly answer the question about whether or not they were "smushing."

During the "DWTS" season finale, Chmerkovskiy joked that he wanted to "ravage" her and have ice-skating Russian babies named Boris and Oleg. When asked when he would propose to her, he responded, "probably tomorrow." He later backpedaled by clarifying that he had no desire to name his children Boris and Oleg.

Whatever their relationship status, it's clear that Davis and Chmerkovskiy care deeply for each other. In a May 21 interview, brother Val Chmerkovskiy said that Maks loved her more than he's loved any woman. However, he believes that the relationship transcends any romantic label. As he explained, "he loves her probably more than I've seen him love another woman—he loves and adores her—but it's like a King Kong type of relationship."

Elaborating on what he meant, Val commented, "she's precious, and he's gentle with her because he wants to see her shine and he won't want to hurt her. He's willing to calm down for her because she's the last person he wants to see cry and the last person he wants to hurt."

Are Meryl Davis and Maksim Chmerkovskiy playing up the "showmance" in order to draw fans' interest? Or are bloggers making a story out of nothing? Is their chemistry romantic? Or are they just good friends? Would you like them to have babies named Boris and Oleg?
