Do you know what is in your food? Did it come from Mother Nature, or a science lab altered by a biotech company? More importantly, is it safe? GMOs are all over the supermarket shelves; do you know what you’re eating or what you are feeding your children/family?
Genetically Modified Organisms
As the Non GMO Project explains: "GMOs, or genetically modified organisms, are plants or animals created through the gene splicing techniques of biotechnology, also called genetic engineering, or GE.”
Center for Food Safety
This altering of Mother Nature is done for things like insecticide resistance, survival of herbicide applications, withstanding weather, drought, disease, to grow faster and bigger, and much more. Problem is, according leading experts such as “The Center for Food Safety,” and contrary to the biotech industry assurances - GMO seeds aren’t doing any of these things, except making a company, namely Monsanto, very wealthy and in complete control of the food agriculture business.
The controversy surrounding GMOs is headline news recently and has been for over a year. In light of the May 2013 protests taking place in more than 400 cities in 52 different countries, where millions hit the streets and joined the fight, carrying an array of signs such as, “Real Food 4 Real People” and “Label GMOs, It’s Our Right to Know,” the words fell on deaf ears. Nothing is being changed, labeled or even acknowledged at this point.
Center for Food Safety’s nationwide poll showed 96% of consumers want to know if they’re eating GMOs and want the products labeled. The major developer of these foods, Monsanto, apparently wants none of that. What on Earth are they trying to hide?
From the Washington Post: “Monsanto Co. said that it respects people’s rights to express their opinion on the topic but that its seeds improve agriculture by helping farmers produce more from their land while conserving resources such as water and energy.”
From seeds that resist disease, to seeds that put out twice as much food as Mother Nature intended – Monsanto is doing more than putting out Frankenseeds. From Sierra Permaculture: “Now they [Monsanto] are buying up small and regional seed companies so that they can inseminate these formerly independent seed lines with their own GMO Frankenseeds. Their ultimate goal is to strip humanity of our natural, open-source heritage so that they can claim ownership of all plant life and charge a premium price to anyone who wishes to grow or reproduce the plants that they control — even crops that are unintentionally cross-pollinated!”
Which, by the way has become a serious issue in itself – cross-pollination. In a lawsuit filed by over 80 organic farmers, growers and seed companies, to protect themselves against Monsanto lawsuits in the future for cross-pollination, Monsanto won that battle in the Southern District of New York Court of Appeals. This is most likely because GMO seeds had not yet contaminated the farmer’s crops - yet.
The fear is that they will mix with these farmers’ organic seeds by wind pollination, and be sued by Monsanto for stealing it’s well kept secret weapon. Yes, this is true, this has happened in the past and many a farmer has been put out of business because they were using Monsanto seeds without permission.
GMOs are Proven Harmful:
Organic Consumers Association has posted evidence of pigs that were harmed when consuming GMOs that included severe inflammation in their stomachs, heavier uterus’ that indicated possible disease. Remember, pigs have a digestive tract similar to humans, not to mention that people still consume these pigs that are sick.
A new study reveals, as stated by crop and livestock advisor Howard Vlieger, "In my experience, farmers have found increased production costs and escalating antibiotic use when feeding GM crops. In some operations, the livestock death loss is high, and there are unexplained problems including spontaneous abortions, deformities of new-born animals, and an overall listlessness and lack of contentment in the animals.
"In some cases, animals eating GM crops are very aggressive. This is not surprising, given the scale of stomach irritation and inflammation now documented. I have seen no financial benefit to farmers who feed GM crops to their animals."
The Rat Tests:
The rat testing was the big indicator that something is seriously wrong. From RT, Question More that published a study in which rats were fed a diet of GMO corn ended up sickly, and full of golf ball sized tumors. They also had liver and kidney damage and died prematurely. This study is what led to France ousting GMO maize seeds and/or products from ever entering their country.
From Reuters: "Based on the conclusion…[of the tests done on rats] the government will ask the European authorities to take all necessary measures to protect human and animal health, measures that could go as far as an emergency suspension of imports of NK603 maize in the European Union," the French health, environment and farm ministries said in a joint statement.
The ban went into effect in France more than six years ago, it remains in effect today.
Testing / Labeling:
The FDA (Food and Drug Administration) doesn’t require labeling on GMO products; nor do they require testing to ensure safety for consumers. Americans are, in short, guinea pigs.
Since the GEs used come from foreign sources, including bacteria, virus promoters, and antibiotics, GMOs should have been tested before ever hitting the shelves.
People are angry! Human safety is the biggest reason – and the lack of data available to determine safety prompted over 60 countries to restrict, or outright ban the production and sale of GMOs. Why then does the U.S. government approve their use? Could it be profit driven? Or, could the studies that are basing their decision be biased, with statistic deception?
GMOs are in our food in frightening numbers:
- U.S. Corn – 85%
- Soybeans – 91%
- Cotton – 88%
- Processed foods – 75% (soda, condiments, crackers, etc.)
Sadly, although a major fight by organic farmers and the public is underway to get GMOs labeled, it is still unresolved.
Until the FDA actually labels products accordingly, perhaps avoiding GMOs would be wise:
The guide to non-GMO foods offers a listing of non-GMO products for your shopping guide. It would be in your best interest to follow this list.
The Center for Food Safety’s “Take Action” site can help you get your voice heard on this topic – scream loud… not that anyone will hear but you’ll feel better.
In actuality, if our food is altered without proper testing or without evidence of safety, and millions stand up in protest to demand labeling - multiple times, shouldn’t it be done without hesitation? What have they to hide? Abraham Lincoln said: ours is a government of the people, by the people, for the people – really?
