Are Games Too Easy Now?

Growing up I always loved video games. I would spend hours on end playing them, but the only problem was that I was never any good at them. This problem plagued me from the Atari 2600 all the way until the current crop of home gaming consoles. Now I find myself to be a master gamer that can seemingly conquer any game thrown at me, with the lone exception being Demon Souls. This got me to thinking about whether or not I have become that much better at gaming or are games too easy now?
During the days of the Nintendo Entertainment System I never beat a Mario or Zelda game. I would always get a few hours in and things got too hard for me. I would lose patents and give up. The same thing persisted with the SNES and Sega Genesis. In fact up until the PlayStation 1 the only game I had ever beaten was Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time. It’s a sad admission, I know.
PlayStation 1 produced many classics like the first Resident Evil and Medal Gear Solid, but I was never a good enough player skill wise to beat these games. The puzzle elements were easy but it was the game play that really took advantage of my lack of skills. During this period I began to play Tony Hawks Pro Skater and quickly became very good at it. However, it would be the only game series I beat until I beat Silent Hill 3 on the PlayStation 2 in 2005. Bottom line I sucked at gaming.
So here I am all these years later pondering the question of whether or not gaming has become too easy now or am I just that much better? The answer to me seems to be that the games have gotten significantly easier; though that’s not to say it’s a bad thing. I actually enjoy being able to be beat games like Mass Effect and Dragon Age. These games have great stories and great game play innovations that I enjoy.
It could also be that I have gotten a little better and more patient with games. I used to give up rather easily. Now days I don’t give up when I reach a really hard part of game. Now days I become determined to beat those parts and it feels satisfying. Also it can’t be overlooked that I am a little smarter now than when I was a kid, or at least I hope I am, but that’s a debate for another article.
So what do you the readers think? Have you had similar experiences in your evolution of gaming? Do you find games to be harder now days? Let me know what you think.
