The Dancing With the Stars contestants are going to be fun to watch this season. Watching the big reveal on Tuesday morning on Good Morning America there was some excitement in the air. Viewers got the chance to see some big celebrities and some contestants that could offer a great season. And there were a few questionable people too. According to USA Today on Tuesday, the fans are delighted to see the new faces of the ballroom.
Sometimes the word celebrity is stretched. And that is really obvious this year on DWTS. The awkward rush to search online has everyone wondering who is Diana Nyad as she isn't known in pop culture or Hollywood. She is an accomplished athlete, a distinguished journalist, and probably a pretty sweet lady (judging from her interviews on CNN.) Is she a celebrity? Nope. Nada. Absolutely not. Not even close.
Who is Diana Nyad? Diana Nyad is an American author, motivational speaker, and world record long-distance swimmer. She first gained attention for her swim in 1975 when she swam around Manhattan. In 2013, on her fifth attempt and at age 64, she became the first person confirmed to swim from Cuba to Florida without the aid of a shark cage, swimming from Havana to Key West.
While some viewers might appreciate the positive vibes that Nyad brings to the ballroom, even she has to be aware that she isn't a celebrity compared to Drew Carey or even Charlie White. It’s such a drastic difference that her battle on this show is going to be tough.
As for Dancing With the Stars, it’s nice to see they picked someone who is different than the typical cast, but viewers have to question why they didn't find a celebrity swimmer like Michael Phelps or someone who has real star power.
