Arctic temperatures return chill surfing in Texas

Schools were closed, news reports warned of perilous winter weather conditions, and the entire northern half of the United States guffawed as Houstonians tried to navigate in freezing rain. Traffic is bad enough in Houston. Yet, Houstonians longed for the days when road rage and mapping out Waze were their only roadway obstacles. As windshields set to defrost (a setting Houstonians rarely use except when thawing steaks in the microwave), hundreds of accidents were already in the making. For a full day, icicles took up permanent residence on the Texas coast’s palm trees and surf shop signs. As the weekend approached, air temperatures slowly rose, and Corpus Christi’s beloved Bob Hall Pier was looking mighty welcoming to cooped up surfers.

On Saturday, January 25, 2014, the water temperature at Bob Hall Pier had escalated slowly to the low 50s. Air temperature still lingered around an inhospitable 36 degrees Fahrenheit. Although this winter cold is unseasonable for the south, Texans made the most out of the surfable situation. Winter weekends are the best time to surf in Texas. Southerners may temporarily retire their rashy/boardshort combo or super thin mil wetsuits in exchange for hoods and booties. Today, Texas experienced freakishly warm weather. Some were back in their bikinis goading Texas tan lines. However, the National Weather Service substantiates the onset of more Corpus cold weather and a possibility of surf in the near future:

IN THE WAKE OF A STRONG ARCTIC AIR MASS MOVING IN ON MONDAY...EXPECT COLD TEMPERATURES AGAIN. HIGHS WILL BE IN THE MID TO UPPER 40S TUES/WED. LOWS WILL BE IN THE LOW 30S TUESDAY NIGHT/WEDNESDAY MORNING....AND A MIX OF WINTRY PRECIPITATION WILL BE POSSIBLE TUESDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY MORNING. ONSHORE FLOW WILL REDEVELOP WEDNESDAY EVENING...AND TEMPERATURES WILL THEN GRADUALLY WARM UP TO THE LOW 60S BY THURSDAY.”
