Colorado is bringing in the start of meteorological winter with touch of snow and a healthy dose of extreme cold temperatures. With the mercury plummeting below zero, Denver set two record low temperatures on back-to-back dates.

Mother Nature delivered a light coating of snow to the Colorado Front Range yesterday along with frigid temperatures.

Before the day was done, not long before midnight, the temperature had dropped to -13 degrees. The chilly reading shattered the record low temperature for December 4. The previous mark was -5 degrees last set in 2008.

Clearing skies brought even colder temperatures early in the morning Thursday. Not long before sunrise, the temperature at Denver International Airport dropped to -15 degrees. The measurement tied the record low temperature for December 5 set in 1972.

Daytime high temperatures Thursday are expected to only climb to around 10 degrees. Friday and the weekend will bring highs in the teens and it appears it will be until at least Tuesday before Denver sees temperatures above freezing.

The normal high temperature for the date is 44 degrees and the normal low 18 degrees.

In terms of snowfall, the seasonal total to date for Denver is running well behind normal. To date 6.5 inches has been received during the season.

On average 13.0 inches is recorded by the end of November in Denver and 21.2 inches by the end of December.
