Arcitic chill returns to the region as cold front brings light snow, gusty wind

Areas of light snow and flurries will work eastward from western New York State, into the Capital Region, through the morning hours today. This activity was associated with a cold front that was moving rapidly eastward, and should be through the area by early afternoon. Behind this system westerly winds will kick up, gusting at times to near 35 MPH. A few renegade flurries and/or snow showers may form during the afternoon hours, especially over upslope portions of the Adirondacks, Taconic’s, Green, and Berkshire mountains.

A mostly clear night, with light winds, and ideal conditions for rapid fall off of surface temperatures looks to be in store tonight as a transient high pressure system moves into the region. Temperatures may start out Thursday below zero, or close to it, over the immediate Capital Region and vicinity.

Another in the series of ‘clipper’ type low pressure systems will drag a cold front, not to dissimilar to today’s scenario, through the region on Thursday. A period of light snow and/or snow squalls looks to accompany the feature, along with brisk and gusty winds once again in its wake.

The abnormally cold air will remain in place across the region through the end of the work week, with a break in the precipitation expected on Friday. Unsettled weather, with a parade of Arctic cold fronts bringing the threat for light snow from time to time, and facilitating the cold air’s grip on the region, looks to persist through the weekend.

Temperatures look to remain well below normal through the weekend, by as much as 10 to 20 degrees. Precipitation amounts should average near normal, thanks to the periodic bouts of light snow associated with each respective clipper system. These snows should not be significant in terms of accumulations, but of a more nuisance variety.
