Archie dies saving his gay best friend Kevin Keller in an upcoming issue of the long-running comic book Life With Archie. For many readers of the comics, a part of their childhoods will die with him. In a shocking and controversial move, Archie Andrews meets his maker looking down the barrel of a gun and taking a bullet meant for Keller. It's tragic and sad, but it's also a reflection of the world in which we live.
Kevin Keller first appeared on the comic book scene in 2010 in Veronica issue #202, which sold out and became the first ever comic in the Archie Comics history to be reprinted . Veronica herself expressed a romantic interest in Keller. The feeling wasn't mutual, and Keller later told a mutual friend that he was gay. That first appearance led to a self-titled four-issue mini-series followed by another self-titled series. Now, just four years later, the introduction of Kevin Keller means Archie dies saving his gay best friend. Who could have seen this coming?
According to a July 14, 2014 report by People, Archie Comics publisher and co-CEO Jon Goldwater spoke about the character's unfortunate demise, praising Archie for his heroic actions.
He said, "The way in which Archie dies is everything that you would expect of Archie. He dies heroically. He dies selflessly. He dies in the manner that epitomizes not only the best of Riverdale but the best of all of us. It's what Archie has come to represent over the past almost 75 years."
The Archie Comics official website is currently accepting pre-orders for the controversial issue. Ironically, they are also offering a promotion today only with the promotion code of HAPPY. (Note: Exclusions do apply, and the terms of the promotion can be found on the Archie Comics site).
What do you think about this tragic end to an iconic character? Will you buy the issue of Life With Archie where Archie dies saving his gay best friend? Comments are welcome.
