With two of Detroit’s most famous businesses as neighbors, the Arcade Bar was a popular downtown hangout that dated back to the 1930s. Life for the little dive bar two doors down from Lafayette Coney Island and American Coney Island ended when declining sales finally forced its doors closed during the summer of 2008.
But if all goes well, new life is just around the corner.
Boasting new ownership but the same name, the Arcade Bar is slated to re-open sometime later this year, according to a worker currently refurbishing the bar’s interior. Plans call for the new Arcade to feature three levels of bar space.
Also a big change for the Anchor will be the absence of the recently demolished Lafayette Building. A park is being built in its place, and the Arcade hopes to feature a doorway that leads out into it. Look for future reports from the Arcade later this summer as construction inside and out continues.
So long, Mac's?
No details as to why, but Mac’s on Third has once again closed its doors, less than a year after it reopened. It'll be interesting to see this fall if the owners are closing for good, or if they revert back to their one-time strategy of opening only during Red Wing home games.
