If you play video games or just have an interest in weaponry, you'll want to check out “Arcade Arms” on the YouTube channel Geek and Sundry. “Arcade Arms” premiered March 13 with Kratos' Blades of Chaos from “God of War: Ascension,” the newest game in the series, which released March 12.
This pilot episode shows clips from the game, including a history of how the Blades of Chaos were forged. Then, a real blacksmith explains how he makes swords, giving viewers some of the history and a front-row seat to the forging process. Now, his blade is not the iconic chained weapon in the game, but is much more similar to what Kratos used in the first game, a short sword common to Spartans.
The next part of the show is where an actual trained fighter illustrates technique. This is where “Arcade Arms” diverges from “Man at Arms” territory and feels more like “Deadliest Warrior.” It's going to be a challenge to keep this segment good enough for the video game audience who know the fighting moves of their favorite games more intimately than someone just watching a TV show probably would.
The final segment, a choreographed fight, was another area that received mixed reviews in YouTube comments. Some found the Hollywood style too over-the-top for a battle between a Spartan and a Barbarian.
Gamers have already chimed in with suggestions for weapons from their favorite games, and numbers are going to be crucial for the hopeful show. With a second season of the Geek and Sundry channel still in question, it's important for fans to comment and, above all, subscribe. To further encourage subscriptions and fan feedback, Geek and Sundry will be teaming up with Sony to give away “God of War” prizes. The contest ends March 27, so make your way over to find out how to earn entries.
