Arbor Day 2014 is April 26. National Arbor Day is celebrated every year on the last Friday in April. In Nebraska, it is a civic holiday. Each state celebrates its own state holiday. The customary observance is to plant a tree. On the first Arbor Day, April 10, 1872, an estimated one million trees were planted.

The small Spanish village of Villanueva de la Sierra is the town where was held the first Arbor Day around the world, an initiative launched in 1805 by the local priest with the enthusiastic support of the entire population.

Birdsey Northrop of Connecticut was responsible for globalizing Arbor Day when he visited Japan in 1883 and delivered his Arbor Day and Village Improvement message. In that same year, the American Forestry Association made Northrop the Chairman of the committee to campaign for Arbor Day nationwide. He also brought his enthusiasm for Arbor Day to Australia, Canada, and Europe.

Arbor Day is celebrated on every continent in the world in hundreds of countries and municipalitiesat some time in spring or early summer. In some countries it is a holiday. In China, it is mandatory to plant 3-5 trees, or the equivalent, or pay a fine.


To raise awareness for the planet and help reforest lumbered areas, decorate, and appreciate trees, many groups or businesses frequently give away trees or plants for Arbor Day.

The Arbor Day Foundation has great giveaways. For a $0 joining fee, you can receive 10 trees (many types to choose from) for yourself or to gift a nature lover. They can be planted in the yard or any place where some trees will enhance the area’s beauty. If you don’t want or need personal trees, the Foundation will plant 10 trees in your honor in a national forest.

For a $20 donation, you can become a charter member of the Arbor Day Foundation’s Hazelnut Research Project now and get 3 free hazelnut bushes for your own lifetime supply of hazelnuts.

Check out many other projects worldwide through the foundation, from saving the rainforest to tree education, to overnight vacations.

Many US cities are giving away free trees Arbor Day weekend. Some are Columbia MO, wake Forest NC, the Missouri Botanical Garden in t Louis, Olympia WA, and Overland Park KS.

Many cities are having parades and ceremonial tree plantings, too. Check your local municipality for events in your area.
