My cat, Purrmeister had to be euthanized in November of 2008. Now, Socks, the kitten discussed in my first article -- adopted from the Henderson County Humane Society -- has turned one year old (see the slideshow). Today, I found a way to honor both events.
April 30th is Arbor Day and the Arbor Day Foundation has created a program called Trees for Pets.
Part of the slogan created by The Arbor Day Foundation for this program is, "They're more than our pets. They're our friends. They carve out a special place in our hearts and in our lives. What better way to honor them than with the gift of trees?"
"... trees are important to all living creatures who share the Earth. From environmental gains to the social advantages we enjoy when admiring their beauty in our landscape, the benefits of trees touch each of us daily. Yet they face serious challenges, challenges like fire, disease, and insects that can destroy stands of trees that have taken decades to grow."
Do you want to know how you can honor a departed pet or celebrate a current one? Read on.
If you have enough room and money to plant one or more trees yourself, call or visit your favorite Henderson, Owensboro or Evansville area nursery. Ask questions about what types of tree would grow well in your soil, find out the price(s) and buy one or more trees for your yard or farm. Take the tree(s) home, plant it and dedicate a tree to past and/or present four legged friends.
Don't have much room or money, like yours truly? Then check out this Arbor Day "shopping" link. For only $1 per tree, you can have a minimum of 10 trees planted in honor of your pet(s) and/or the pet loving people in your life. Do you want to give the gift of trees to someone else? Type in the needed information and you can print out a Gift Card or have one sent to your benefactor.
Animal Professionals, you can go one step farther. The "Trees for Pets" program allows you to show just how special your clients are to you .... Each Trees for Pets certificate honors a special companion by planting a tree in their honor or memory in our nation's forests to help replace grand trees that are lost each year to fire or disease. For every $5 donation, one tree will be planted and cared for in an American forest. Included in the cost is the printing and mailing of a personalized Trees for Pets certificate."
So, decide how to honor your pet(s), pet loving friends and/or clients and help Mother Earth by planting trees or paying the Arbor Day Foundation to plant some for you.
