Arapahoe HS marching band takes center stage at Philly Mummers Parade

The Arapahoe High School marching band will lead the Mummers Parade in Philadelphia on New Year’s Day.
Although the trip was planned months ago, it comes at a time where the students are still reeling from a fatal shooting at their school a little more than two weeks ago.
The Mummers Parade is held each year in Philadelphia and it’s thought to be the oldest folk festival in the country. About one-thousand Mummers will be participating in the event. Local clubs wear elaborate costumes and compete in one of four different categories.
Arapahoe’s band director Shawn Funk told KYW Philadelphia TV the band needed something fresh and new so he coordinated with the organization to have the band march. “We wanted a new experience -and it’s all very new to me,” he told KYW-TV.
The band toured the Mummers Museum on Monday and will march on January 1st. “I want the kids to feel like it’s their event—I just want them to have a fun time.” Funk told KYW-TV.
The trip is also a chance for the students to focus on something other than the tragedy at their school where a student gunman shot and killed Claire Davis before killing himself.
Funk told another Philly TV station that he wasn’t going to talk about anything related to the shooting, and would only focus on the parade and the marching band.
A public memorial for Davis will also be held on January 1st at the National Western Stock Show Complex in Denver.
