The History of Diving Museum continues its free Immerse Yourself! series Wednesday, Nov. 17, at 7 p.m. with “Aquarius Team 2010: Living and Working Beneath the Sea.”
Gathering at the museum at mile marker 83 bayside in Islamorada attendees will go more than 60 feet below the ocean’s surface for a live dialogue with Aquanauts from the Aquarius habitat, located at Conch Reef, four miles offshore of Tavernier. Aquanauts will introduce the unique habitat, its history, capabilities and role in understanding and protecting our oceans. The Aquarius team will also share new discoveries from their latest missions and various projects taking place in the underwater habitat.
The Aquarius Habitat, owned by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and operated by the University of North Carolina Wilmington, supports marine science research, training for NASA Astronauts and Navy Divers as well as a wide range of marine education activities. Aquarius serves as a home base for aquatic research and is a national asset that supports scientists in their efforts to better understand oceans and coastal resources.
Scientific achievements from Aquarius include discoveries related to the damaging effects of ultraviolet light on coral reefs, as well as a better understanding of the significance of present-day changes in coral reefs to distinguish between alterations caused by natural system variability and humans.
The History of Diving Museum at 82990 Overseas Highway is a 501(c)(3) non-profit museum funded by admissions, memberships, grants, corporate sponsors, and individual contributions. The museum is open to the general public daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
No reservations are required. Sponsored in part by the Monroe County Tourist Development Council, call 305-664-9737 for more information, or visit www.DivingMuseum.org.
