April marks the 50th anniversary of the Five Colleges Book Sale

Mark your calendar for April 23rd and 24th for the Five Colleges Book Sale in Lebanon, NH.    This will be the 50th year of this annual used book sale, which is held to raise money for scholarships for NH and VT students at Mount Holyoke, Simmons, Smith, Wellesley and Vassar colleges.  Last year the sale raised enough to donate $11,000 to each college.

Between 35,000 and 40,000 items are typically fo sale at the Five Colleges Book Sale.  Books, manuscripts, prints, maps, memorabilia, CDs, DVDs, videotapes and books-on-tape will be available, excluding volumes such as text books, encyclopedias and magazines.  The event is open to the public and dealers are welcome.

There will be a sealed-bid auction of specialty items between 9 AM and 11 AM on Saturday.  This year's list is not yet available, but last year included volumes such as:

  • DRUMS by James Boyd, Pictures by N. C. Wyeth. Limited edition of 525 copies. This is No. 464, signed by Boyd and Wyeth. Charles Scribner's Sons, 1925, 1928.
  • THE INNOCENTS ABROAD, Or The New Pilgrims' Progress by Mark Twain. American Publishing Company: Hartford, Conn. 1869
  • THREE GUINEAS by Virginia Woolf. Book jacket designed by Vanessa Bell. The Hogarth Press: London 1938.

Previews of specialty items will not be available, but all will be on display during the bidding time.
