Mayor Mike Rawlings along with the Dallas Cultural Affairs Commission hope to throw a large spotlight on the arts and culture of Dallas for visitors and the citizens by proclaiming April 7 – 14 the first Dallas Arts Week.
“Dallas Arts Week is a great opportunity to show the variety and quality of literary, visual and performing artist in Dallas,” said Mayor Rawlings.
Several venues are promoting the arts not during arts week but throughout the month.
“Our city is a major explosion of arts and culture,” said John Paul Batiste, chairman of the Dallas Cultural Affairs Commission, TACA board member and founder and CEO of AVOI, an arts advocacy consultancy in an exclusive interview with The Examiner. “I believe the most important thing is to build awareness and appreciation for what we have in Dallas in regards to the arts.”
“We cannot take creativity for granted,” said Batiste. “That is what motivates us to prevail. The status quo is what sequesters us from each other. It is to challenge us to exist and continue. This is to lead us, motivate us to leave the planet better when we started.”
“It is because of the commitment and generosity of leaders and individuals in the community that we are able to share the arts with one another,” said Batiste. “I believe the most important thing is to build awareness and appreciation for what we have in Dallas in regards to the arts.”
“We are a great prize, not to just people from around the world, but to people who live in this city,” said Batiste.
Speaking of prizes, Dallasites are encouraged to share their experiences with art around the city online. Participants can enter the contest and win prizes by sharing their photos using the #DallasArtsWeek hashtag on Twitter and Instagram, or by visiting the photo contest tab on the Dallas Arts Week Facebook page. Prizes include tickets to exhibits and performances throughout Dallas.
