April 6, 2010 - The Lord of the Rings: The Motion Picture Trilogy Blu-ray and worldwide exclusives

For the very first time ever, The Lord of the Rings: The Motion Picture Trilogy comes to Blu-ray. Directed by Peter Jackson, the trilogy includes the theatrical version of The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers and The Return of the King. Based on J.R.R. Tolkien's masterpiece, it is an epic adventure of friendship and courage by hobbits, elves, dwarves, men and a wizard who join together in a fellowship all to keep a ring they must destroy from falling into the hands of a dark and powerful lord.

Synopsis

Hobbit Frodo Baggins (Elijah Wood) inherits from Bilbo Baggins (Ian Holm) a ring that the Dark Lord Sauron (Sala Baker) is after so he can use to rise again and enslave Middle-earth. The wizard Gandalf the Grey (Ian McKellen) comes to warn Frodo about the dangers and tells him the history of the ring. Originally, the ring was forged by Dark Lord Sauron himself and used to ruled Middle-earth, but he was then overthrown in the War of the Last Alliance. As the ring was lost in Middle-earth, it was found by Gollum (Andy Serkis), who then lost it to Bilbo Baggins in The Hobbit. It was safe in the Shire for many years until Gollum was captured by Dark Lord Sauron and revealed that Bilbo Baggins possessed the ring he had lost. To protect the Shire, Frodo Baggins, along with friends Peregrin 'Pippin' Took (Billy Boyd), Meriadoc 'Merry' Brandybuck (Dominic Monaghan) and Samwise 'Sam' Gamgee (Sean Astin) set forth on a perilous journey to Rivendell. As Frodo is nearly killed, they are rescued by Elf princess Arwen (Liv Tyler) and her father, Elrond (Hugo Weaving) and escorted safely to Rivendell. There, the Council of Elrond decides it is not safe and the ring must be destroyed in the fires of Mount Doom in Mordor to end any tyrannical hopes by Dark Lord Sauron or anyone else including traitor wizard Saruman (Christopher Lee). Frodo becomes the Ring Bearer and a fellowship of eight companions will go with him on the journey. The chosen eight companions are: two men, Isildur's heir Aragorn (Viggo Mortensen) and Boromir (Sean Bean), son of the Steward of the land of Gondor; Prince Legolas Greenleaf (Orlando Bloom) of the Silvan Elves of Mirkwood; wizard Gandalf; Dwarf Gimli (John Rhys-Davies); and Frodo's hobbit friends, Pippin, Merry and Sam. Queen Galadriel (Cate Blanchett) and Lord Celeborn (Marton Csokas) of the forest of Lothlórien send them on their odyssey with gifts that will prove useful in the quest. At all costs the Fellowship must ensure the ring's destruction to save Middle-Earth and its inhabitants.

As the power of the ring becomes stronger, Frodo realizes the Fellowship must be broken in order to survive. Sam and Frodo set off on their own and find Gollum has been following them. They end up enlisting Gollum to lead them to Mordor. Gollum has other plans for Frodo and Sam, as he only desires the return of his precious ring. Sam is suspicious of Gollum, but Frodo only pities him. As Frodo's companion, Sam must watch over Frodo to ensure no harm comes to him or the ring as they near Mordor. In the meanwhile, Saruman has decided to betray Dark Lord Sauron and stage his own army. The rest of the surviving Fellowship must prepare for the battle and fight both Dark Lord Sauron and Saruman. The War of the Ring has begun.

Falling to Gollum's plan, Frodo is poisoned and then captured by the orcs. Frodo is imprisoned in a tower and only Sam can save him. Now Sam must become the hero so they can both finish the task of destroying the ring once and for all. The Fellowship manages to defeat Saruman, but Sauron and his Ringwraiths have taken city after city in Middle-earth. In an act of desperacy, Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli set out to enlist the Army of the Dead. The Fellowship must now call together all the Middle-earth allies they can depend on to fight. They hope it will distract Sauron long enough for Frodo and Sam to return the ring back to the Mount Doom fires where it was first forged.
