For this week's new releases we get to go after some bad guys and a slew of movies come to Blu-ray. We start with The Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans where Nicolas Cage gets to play a rogue cop who must find a way solve a murder and take control his drug and gambling addictions and his illicit love for a prostitute played by the sexy Eva Mendes. Then off to The Collector where the writers of the Saw and Feast franchises bring us bad guy A versus bad guy B in a most gruesome bloody extravaganza ever when an ex-con finds a killer is lurking inside the house he was planning to rob. Finally in Dolan's Cadillac, Christian Slater plays the untouchable mobster who meets his match when a husband vows to avenge his wife's murder at all costs. In Blu-ray land, The Lord of the Rings: The Motion Picture Trilogy arrives offering the theatrical version of the three movies. In conjunction to this epic's release, the animated version of The Lord of the Rings gets remastered for a new DVD and Blu-ray treatment. Nine more older movie titles finally come to Blu-ray as well.
The Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans is the latest in Director Werner Herzog's catalog of extremes. Post Katrina, New Orleans Police Sergeant Terrence McDonagh (Nicolas Cage) is used to getting his way, flaunting his gun and badge. Mix that lethally with a drug addiction problem stemming from a back injury, excessive gambling tendencies and a tumultuous love affair with prostitute Frankie Donnenfeld (Eva Mendes), he is quickly spinning out of control. Will he be able to perform his duties and find the murderer of a Senegalese family before he becomes a victim of his vices and loses his badge? Nicholas Cage and Eva Mendes are joined with an all-star cast including Val Kilmer, Xzibit, Brad Dourif, Fairuza Balk and Jennifer Coolidge.

I'm glad I finally got to watch the LOTR cartoon for the first time today. But I did not like the mix of the different styles of animation. I am glad I read the books or I would have misunderstood much of it. Too bad they never finished it. Thanks for the review.
Evelyn, I'm sorry you didn't enjoy Bashki's animated LOTR. There are other LOTR fans who feel the same way you do. I agree it is a pity they never had a chance to complete it. Maybe someone will do a "remake" down the line.
