Direct Imports from Estelle!
”Estelle Imports is an importer and distributor of fine wines from Europe and the Americas. A small group of long time wine professionals, Estelle operates on the premise they represent wines they would choose to drink. It is an assertion that may seem obvious, but which is often forgotten in an industry driven by commercialism and attempts to out-think the drinking public.
”Estelle Wines are chosen both to accurately represent their origins and to maximize the relation of quality to the price of the bottle.
”Join us this Friday as we welcome Dougal with Estelle Imports.
”Just come on in, no reservations necessary!”

FRIDAY SIPS - 2010 Oregon Pinot Noirs
TODAY, FRIDAY APRIL 4, 3:30 - 6:30
All of the hype and accolades are well-deserved and very real. No, not for 2012 Oregon Pinots but for 2010, a vintage of grandeur that none of us saw coming. Like the duckling that has grown into a beautiful swan, these wines are very ageworthy yet have early accessibility to them. Alas, quantities were small and being 3+ years past vintage, many are long sold-out.
Come and join us today for one of the final chances to enjoy a line-up of local Pinots from this fantastic vintage!
2010 GROCHAU PINOT NOIR WILLAMETTE VALLEY
$21.99 BTL./$263.88 CASE
Since we started working with John Grochau's wines 7 years ago we have always remarked at how much virtue and value are in these bottles. As we have watched 2010 unfold into one of Oregon's prolific vintages, John has rode the wave and once again put forth another excellent Pinot Noir. The question here is, would you like an Oregon Pinot for 22 bucks that has the capacity to age through the end of the decade?
A resounding combination of dark and vibrant scents that are laid back and steadily build as the wine is aired in the glass; impressive depth and range of fruit plus earth beam in the mouth flowing into a long finish of red cherry and peppery tones that echo well after the wine is swallowed. Savory and delicious now but given the attention to detail and structure Grochau Cellars Pinots possess, more stuff is going to emerge over the next 5-6+ years.
2010 PATTON VALLEY PINOT NOIR ESTATE
$33.99 BTL./$407.88 CASE
Since their first vintage in 1999 the Patton Valley team of Monte Pitt and Dave Chen have clearly made a mark on the Oregon Pinot Noir scene, establishing themselves and their Gaston, Oregon-located vineyard. The terroir on this flank of the Willamette Valley in Washington county lends itself to dark-scented and textured wines that certainly pack a lot of pizzazz and combined with the underlying finesse of 2010, the results have been nothing short of superb.
Stylistically, the emphasis here is on purity of fruit. Haunting tones of black fruit, and licorice, are very well integrated with its spice, herbs and an underlying strawberry aspect all carrying through to a deceptively long follow-through. Drink through 2020+.
2010 BRICK HOUSE PINOT NOIR "MOE'S"
$39.99 BTL./$479.88 CASE
One of the originators of Oregon's organic viticulture movement, former CBS Middle East correspondent and Oregon native Doug Tunnell planted his Ribbon Ridge area vineyard site in 1990. Converting over to biodynamic farming, limiting production and being all about the vineyard site, the small production is always sought-after by Oregon wine lovers. Relatively new and from the McMinnville appellation, Brick House Moe's is a single vineyard Pinot Noir from the Momtazi Vineyard and named after owner Moe Momtazi.
A glorious, poised offering and a very poised take on the terroir of this vineyard, Brick House's version is rather sultry aromas of Italian plums, vibrant red and black cherry, anise and touches of nutmeg and smoke that impressively penetrate the olfactory senses . Luxurious aromas lead to luxurious, but very youthful flavors which pick up lots of structure and backbone. Excellent, persistent but packed finish that features excellent range and material. Will drink and develop nicely for at least another decade

Friday, April 4 our "Friday Tasting" 5:00 - 7:00 pm ...always ends at 7 pm sharp! --$5.00 “Mark Retz of Independent Wines will be pouring selections from Spain, Italy, France and Argentina:
2012 Fuente Milano. 50/50 Viura and Verdejo $9.99
”This wine is produced with 45 year old vine Viura and Verdejo from 15 year old vines. Grapes underwent cold maceration for 12 hours and were then lightly bladder pressed to extract the free run juice. The wine (must) underwent slow alcoholic fermentation for 20 days. Afterwards, it aged in stainless steel vats with its lees for several weeks. Stabilization and light filtration occurred before bottling. "Light yellow. Vibrant aromas of pear nectar, orange pith and mint. Sappy and expansive on the palate, displaying fresh citrus fruit and pear flavors accented by a suggestion of succulent herbs. Shows good clarity on the slightly bitter, refreshing finish."
”2012 Egeo Verdejo. 100% Verdejo $12.99
”This wine is produced by Isaac Fernandez in partnership with a winery whose modern day operations began in 1941. The winery is located in the heart of Rueda just south of the Duero river and has over 80 hectares of vineyards. After harvesting the grapes are destemmed and undergo a pre-crush cold maceration for several hours. A gentle press is followed by a slow, cool temperature controlled fermentation (max temperature is 17° C) in stainless steel tanks. This cool fermentation maintains vibrant fruit aromas in the finished wine. Expressive aromas of dried herbs and freshly cut grass followed by zesty citrus flavors. Although it is light enough to dance with a delicate partner such as a raw oyster, it delivers enough flavor from its light profile to stand up to many fin fish and chicken dishes."
”2010 Villa da Filicaja Chianti Superiore $9.99
”Sangiovese (90%) Canaiolo (5%) Merlot (5%) Harvested entirely by experienced pickers who avoid immature grapes, leaves or broken skins. The grapes we use are harvested by hand into crates with a specific harvest-transfer-destemming criteria, which enables the destemming and the pumping of the must into fermentation tanks within a maximum of 15 minutes after picking the grapes from the
vine. All grapes are checked and sorted bunch by bunch in order to have only perfect grapes for our wine. A ripe, savory style, featuring plum, spice, earth and saline notes matched to a rich texture.
”2011 Domaine de Couron Cotes du Rhone $9.99
Grenache (60%) and Syrah (40%), with an average vine age of 46 years. Integrated farming, with hand harvesting, organic herbicides use, no pesticides and the utilization of sustainable agriculture. Three passes in the vineyard, for only, unbroken healthy grapes. Grenache and Syrah are de-stemmed entirely. Concrete Fermentation at 45 °F for a duration of 21 days, No oak. "Light, with sandalwood and tea notes framing the lightly mulled black cherry and red currant fruit core. Singed sandalwood details
echo on the finish."
”2012 Mil Piedras Malbec $9.99
”Barrel ageing: 5 months in French and American oak barrels. Supple in texture, full bodied and very fruity in style with blackberry, plum, toast, and cassis aromas/flavors. Winemaker: Angel Mendoza (formerly of Trapiche for 20+ years). Mil Piedras wines are made with estate-grown fruit from our single vineyard located in one of the most prestigious wine regions of Argentina, Valle de Uco. Benvenuto de la Serna, maker of Mil Piedras, is a small family winery owned by Silvio Benvenuto (Italian immigrant) whose mission statement is to "make 100% estate and 100% handcrafted wines".
”2012 Rios de Tinta, Ribera del Duero $13.99
”Harvested by hand during and immediately de-stemmed, lightly crushed and moved by gravity. Native yeasts fermentations. Temperatures are kept low looking to emphasize fruit aromas in the finished wine. Maceration lasts between 10 and 12 days. After pressing the wine is racked to clean stainless steel tanks for native malolactic fermentation. Vivid ruby color. Emphatically fruity nose displays scents of fresh red berries and pungent flowers, lifted by a peppery topnote. Juicy raspberry and cherry flavors show very good clarity and pick up a hint of pipe tobacco with aeration. The finish strongly repeats the raspberry note and betrays barely a hint of tannins.

SPANISH REDS ($15)

”I’m back in the saddle post back thingy. I really may literally be in the saddle most of the evening as it’s a little early for me to do a lot of standing. I’m lucky to have my angels, which, for some of you newer tasters, is the name my customers labeled the girls many years ago…..Sandy’s Angels. So tomorrow’s tasting will feature angel Jennifer and angel Christa…….oh yeah, and the wines as well.
”First up for April, Spanish reds. I was planning to have a Portuguese wine or two but there wasn’t one that I tasted that was strong enough to feature. As always, I’m very picky about what we pour and if I don’t find a particular wine that fits we just omit that portion of the tasting. We have a mixture of the modern to the ultra modern to the traditional. I think you’ll find it a very interesting flight with a couple of $10 and unders that truly out preform their price points. Palacios is a benchmark winery from the Priorat region and Muga, one of my favorite Spanish wineries, is always a treat.”

April 4, 2013
“This week we revisit the classics that are the great wines of Bordeaux. As stated several times in the past, nowhere else does cabernet, merlot, cab franc, malbec, and petit verdot reach the pinnacle of elegance and complexity that it does in these vineyards surrounding the Gironde River in southwest France. That will be in ample evidence tomorrow as we have wines from the classic vintages of 2009 and 2010 on display. From the low end to the high, these wines area simply superb buying opportunities. Even our first wine is a red that would benefit from a couple of years in the basement. And obviously the Bonus-Bonus Chateau de Fieuzal isn’t cheap, but man, is that a lot of wine for fifty bucks (plus it comes in these really cool wood six-packs)! So please make arrangements to come taste the wines that have captivated the tastebuds of wine dorks for generations. The pleasure will be all yours….
