Nominated for six Oscars and winner of three Academy Awards for art direction, cinematography and visual effects, Golden Globe winner James Cameron's Avatar finally comes to DVD and Blu-ray on Earth Day, April 22, 2010. With James Cameron's innovative 3D technology, Avatar has redefined 3D filmmaking. It Is the all-time highest earning movie ever domestically, bringing in a total of almost $750 million since its release on December 18, 2009 in theaters. Ranking on Amazon.com sales rank as the #1 and #2 bestsellers in the Movies & TV category, it will sure to be a winner for DVD & Blu-ray sales as well.

Synopsis

The tragic murder of scientist Tom Sully in a robbery leaves behind his twin brother paraplegic war veteran James Sully (Sam Worthington). Because of Jake's similar genetic makup, he is invited to join the Avatar Program to take his brother's place with the promise of new adventure and an expensive spinal surgery. He travels 4.3 light years away from Earth to the Pandora moon of planet Polyphemus, the home of the indigenous Na'vi race. The Avatar Program team is led by Dr. Grace Augustine (Sigourney Weaver), along with biologist Norm Spellman (Joel Moore), Dr. Max Patel (Dileep Rao) and retired Marine pilot Trudy Chacon (Michelle Rodriguez). The Avatar Program's goal is to learn and unite the human-Na'vi races. The team links to avatars, genetically-bred human-Na'vi hybrids, that are unique to each member, so they can enter Pandora as the air is deadly to humans. Linking to Tom's avatar, Jake regains temporary newfound mobility. However, zealous Colonel Miles Quaritch (Stephen Lang) and greedy Resources Development Administration representative Parker Selfridge (Giovanni Ribisi) have other plans in mind for Jake. They want Jake to infiltrate the Na'vi people and convince them to leave their homes. There is a precious natural resource on Pandora under the Na'vi's Hometree that would save Earth's energy crisis called the mineral Unobtanium.

During Jake's first trip to Pandora, he nearly gets killed by a panther-like Thanator. He is rescued by Omaticaya leader's daughter Neytiri (Zoe Saldana). She introduces him to her tribe, "next in line to be King" Tsu'Tey (Laz Alonso) and his friends and her parents, King Eytukan (Wes Studi) and her mother Queen Mo'at (CCH Pounder). Neytiri's mother Queen Mo'at invites Jake to live among them, as it is the will of Eywa, the guiding force and deity Tree of Souls of Pandora and the Na'vi. Bringing the good news back aboard the spacecraft, Dr. Grace Augustine is shocked and happy since she had little expectation from jarhead Jake. Before Jake rejoins the Na'vi people, Colonel Quaritch reminds Jake of his duty and gives him a 3 month ultimatum before the military forces move in with or without Jake.

Back on Pandora, Jake trains to become a Na'vi warrior. At first the Na'vi people do not trust Jake and Tsu'Tey and his friends give Jake a hard time. Under Neytiri's guidance, he learns the Na'vi's customs, passes their trials and earns their trust. He also falls in love with Neytiri as they grow closer. Soon three months have passed and Colonel Quaritch demands results. Jake is now torn between his new allegiance to the Na'vi people who welcome him to become a true Na'vi and his original mission. He begs Colonel Quaritch for one more night to move the Na'vi people. It is then he learns the Na'vi will never leave Hometree, which is connected with Eywa Tree of Souls and their Omaticaya ancesters. 

At daybreak, Colonel Quaritch has begun his attack without Jake. By then all hopes of negotiation are lost and the Na'vi are ready to declare war against the humans. Both sides feel Jake has betrayed their trusts. Will Jake join forces with Colonel Quaritch and help obtain the Unobtanium using his intimate knowledge about the Na'vi race? Or will he join forces with the Na'vi who once welcomed him and unite them all in an epic battle to save Pandora?

Special Features

There will not be any special features for this first release coming out on April 22, 2010. The DVD will contain only the film (run time 162 minutes) and the two-disc Blu-ray Combo Pack will include the Blu-ray and DVD versions of the film. It will be presented in aspect ratio 1.78:1 and 2D. It will not be in 3D.

Both James Cameron and Jon Landau have confirmed there will be a four-disc ultimate edition for Avatar on Blu-ray full of supplementary materials that is slated to be released in November 2010. For people who purchase the barebones first release of Avatar, they will have exclusive access to some of these supplementary materials online through "The Avatar Program" on AvatarMovie.com and a savings coupon to be used towards the ultimate edition of Avatar.

To celebrate the 40th anniversary of Earth Day, 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment and Earth Day Network will plant one million trees in fifteen countries by the end of 2010 and only those who purchase the first release of Avatar will get a chance to adopt a tree and receive a virtual home tree.
