Nominated for two Academy Awards, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 1 is the first part of the two-part finale to the epic fantasy film series that is based on the Harry Potter novels by J. K. Rowling. With Dumbledore gone, it is now up to Harry, Ron and Hermione to save the Wizarding and Muggle worlds. Lord Voldemort has risen to power, gaining control of Hogwarts and the Ministry of Magic with the help of his loyal army of Death Eaters, who terrorize and arrest anyone who might oppose them. Bidding farewell to their families and friends, the brave young trio set off on a dangerous quest to destroy the five remaining Horcruxes, each containing a part of the Dark Lord’s soul that keep him immortal. On their own and on the run from Lord Voldemort and the Death Eaters, the three friends will need each other more than ever if they are to succeed.

In London, Harry, Ron and Hermione find clues to the first of five Horcruxes. With the help of house elves Dobby and Kreacher, they learn that they must break into the Ministry of Magic to steal Dolores Umbridge’s locket, which is actually Salazar Slytherin’s locket that contains the Horcrux. Although they succeed, the three are forced to apparate to the wilderness to hide. Unable to destroy the locket, they take turns wearing it, despite the negative effects on their morale. The effects are so great that Ron begins to feel the quest is hopeless and becomes so jealous of Harry and Hermione’s friendship that he abandons the group.

With only Harry and Hermione left, they set out to Godric’s Hollow in hopes of finding the Sword of Gryffindor, which can destroy Horcruxes. Harry discovers his parents’ graves and the two barely escape an attack by Voldemort’s snake Nagini. They hide in the Forest of Dean and Harry discovers the Sword of Gryffindor at the bottom of a frozen pond one evening. He nearly drowns trying to get the sword, but at the last minute Ron appears with a change of heart and saves him. Ron uses the Sword of Gryffindor and finally destroys the locket.

Trying to locate the next Horcrux, Harry, Ron and Hermione set out to pay a visit to Luna Lovegood’s father Xenophilius, who may have information about a symbol that has shown up time and again during their quest. Mr. Lovegood tells them the symbol represents the Deathly Hallows, which consists of the Elder Wand, the Resurrection Stone and the Cloak of Invisibility. He shares the fairy tale of the Peverell brothers who bested Death and received the three magical items. According to the story, whoever masters all three items will become the Master of Death. When the three attempt to leave, Mr. Lovegood confesses he had betrayed them and the Death Eaters are on their way. The three try to escape, but end up getting captured and brought to the Malfoy Manor.

There Harry, Ron and Hermione come face to face with the Death Eaters and begin the first of the last battles to save the wizarding world from the Dark Lord’s reign of terror.

The final film Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2 will be released in theaters on July 15, 2011.
