Founded by The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation, The "Class Got Brass?" competition is open to middle schools and high schools throughout the state of Louisiana, public and private. Providing instruments to school band programs as an incentive to keep the New Orleans brass band tradition alive is an important goal to The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation.

Schools may enter bands of no more than 12 members and must adhere to the brass band tradition. The first place winning school will receive $10,000 in instruments for their school's band program. The second-place school gets $6,000, and third-place gets $4,000.

Applications are due Monday, March 10 and the finals will be held on Sunday, March 23. Click here for the competition guidelines. The contest application can be found here.

In addition, New Orleans own Troy "Trombone Shorty" Andrews, whom performed at the Grammys last night, is sweetening the pot by donating 25 trumpets and 25 trombones to New Orleans schools. Schools may enter the Trombone Shorty Horn Give-Away lottery by using this online application form - the deadline to enter is also March 10. These horns will be distributed as part of the Class Got Brass? contest on Sunday, March 23, in conjunction with the Congo Square New World Rhythms Festival.
