With the iPad 2 release on Friday, March 11, 2011, Apple is releasing iOS 4.3 today to allow people to update their first generaation iPads as well as iPhone 3g and 4, and iPad Touches that support the new iOS. Just connect your device to your computer, and launch iTunes to backup and fetch the update.

The most important new features for most users are:

  • AirPlay Improvements: Now you can stream content from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to your HDTV via Apple TV or to another device. And now, AirPlay now streams video from your Photos app.
  • Safari: Mostly the improvments are related to increased speed, especially in terms of sites using JavaScript.
  • iTunes Home Sharing: I wrote about Home Sharing and iTunes a few months ago. This update, in addition to the updated iTunes 10.2.1, now allows us to play anythng from any local iTunes library on a Mac or PC on any iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch over a shared Wi-Fi network. That means streaming video, movies, music, podcasts, audiobooks—pretty much any iTunes content. If you've got an iPad or iPhone or iPad Touch with the free Pandora app, you can even stream Padora stations via an AirPort Express to your stereo.

For my part though, my favorite new feature on the iPad is that now they've made iPad Side Switch on the side of the iPad controlled via an iPad System Preference. You can set it to lock orientation, or toggle sound between on/mute.
