Apple iPad tablet computer expected to be unveiled Jan 26 or 27

After months of rumor and conjecture, it looks like Apple’s new multimedia tablet like device – expected to be called the iPad, iTab, or iSlate will be finally be unveiled on January 26 or 27.  Apple has scheduled an event at San Francisco’s Yerba Buena Center for the Arts and is expected to reveal this long awaited product.

The iPad is expected to be a tablet like gadget that will allow its user to listen to music, watch movies, read books and other media.  It is expected to compete with both the netbook category of computers and the growing eReader market.

Speculation has it that the iPad will offer far better software than the notebooks and eReaders currently on the market.  It is expected to allow the user to browse magazines electronically and have an interactive ability that will call up related items – videos of the author, connected photos, related games and audio content.  The iTab is anticipated to allow for third party apps to run on the gadget, part of what has allowed the iPhone and iTouch to explode in the marketplace.

Morgan Stanley analyst Kathryn Huberty was reported to have predicted that the device will have a 10 inch touchscreen with built-in wi-fi.  The web is awash with rumors that the iTab will be priced between $500 and $1,000, with most guesses leaning towards the higher side.

The iPad is expected to ship in March.
