At a press event in New York on Thursday, Apple officially announced iBooks 2 for the iPad.
The new update will now feature "iBook textbooks" which offers iPad users fullscreen textbooks with videos, photos, diagrams and even animation, which aims to give students an easier way to organize and carry their textbooks.
Already on board are McGraw-Hill and Pearson as well as Mifflin Harcourt, who will deliver educational books at $14.99 or less. Additionally, users will also find iBooks Author, which is a free authoring tool for anyone with a Mac to create iBooks textbooks.
“Education is deep in Apple’s DNA and iPad may be our most exciting education product yet. With 1.5 million iPads already in use in education institutions, including over 1,000 one-to-one deployments, iPad is rapidly being adopted by schools across the US and around the world,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing. “Now with iBooks 2 for iPad, students have a more dynamic, engaging and truly interactive way to read and learn, using the device they already love.”
iBooks 2 also allows for study cards, searching and note taking and is now available for free via the App Store, as is iBooks Author.
Additionally, Apple announced the iTunes U app, which gives students and teachers access to education apps, free educational content and thousands of books from iBookstore that can be used for school curriculums.
iTunes U is also available as a free download now.
