Today, Bloomberg reports that Apple has filed a motion in support of gay marriage to the Supreme Court. Apple is joined by companies such as Morgan Stanley, Facebook, and Intel. It will be interesting to see of companies such as Samsung and HTC do the same.
The high court is preparing to take up California’s Proposition 8, the 2008 ballot initiative that halted gay marriage after it was allowed for five months. It is believed that such a proposition would never pass in California these days as people have changed their attitudes on gay marriage.
Even though Apple isn't as big as it used to be, the company still is considered huge and powerful. Filing a motion in support of gay marriage is definitely a victory for equality. Apple could risk alienating some of their more conservative buyers, but the fact that the company is actually taking this risk after not having such a great year is something to be admired. What do you think of Apple's decision to back gay marriage?
