Musical artists have always embraced the world of fashion. They hit the stage to perform their songs in garb depicting their latest wildest concepts. The hope is to give the audience something to talk about or maybe just to hold their attention long enough to get them involved in the performance. It seems that gladiator influenced costumes are trending - from the gladiator carrying Lady Gaga egg birthing to medieval times exorcism of Nicki Minaj’s, well… Atlanta Fashion Examiner does not know exactly what to call that. Some are calling Nicki’s performance an exorcism others are calling it simply a ‘hot mess’. But who are we to judge, right? Isn’t art an expression of the individual – even musical artistry? Some critics are saying the concepts are getting out of control.
Julia Rodriguez- “No didn’t like the performance, as a catholic I found it disrespectful and distasteful. So glad I sent my kids to bed before they could see it.”

Luke Steele of Empire of the Sun donned his gladiator inspired fashion creations as he performed, with his wife Jodie Steele, during the Playstation Vita Launch at Sydney Harbour on February 21, 2012 in Sydney, Australia. She resembled a human sheep dog while he looked like a he had a woman tucked into his shirt for safe keeping.
At first glance it appeared as if Luke Steele had selected the wrong wife mate, as his ensemble brought quickly to mind the costume of Madonna’s Super Bowl XLVI Halftime Show at Lucas Oil Stadium on February 5, 2012 in Indianapolis, Indiana. Check out the slide show photos on the left, captured by Ryan Pierse and Christopher Polk, courtesy of Getty Images, and tell us what you think of Madonna and Luke Steele as gladiator mates!
A lot of time, effort and someone’s money goes into making those garments.
Ty Higginbottom of Atlanta, GA provides the details of some of the garments in Madonna’s Super Bowl XLVI Halftime Show at Lucas Oil Stadium on February 5, 2012 in Indianapolis, Indiana:
‘In true Madonna form, everything is more than it seems. Details from her half-time show emerge: The hand-embroidered gold cape she wore to open the show was a design by Givenchy's Riccardo Tisci, who created all of the outfits for her performance. Philip Treacy created the matching gold headdress. Bulgari designed the earrings, which featured 19.6 carats of diamonds set in white gold. Madonna's belt was made of black python skin, and was hand-studded and hand-embroidered. Erickson Beamon designed both M.I.A. and Nicki Minaj's headdress- gold pieces with dangling chains and Swarovski crystals. So just in case you were under a rock during the superbowl half-time show, here it is again. Fashion and pop/rock meet on an epic scale for 12.5mins!’
One thing is for sure. The artists keep us guessing and on the edge of our seats waiting to see what else they have up their sleeves, as they continue to try to outdo one another or their own latest performance!
As a side note, for those of you sporty fashionistas reading this article that got stuck at the news of the Playstation Vita Launch, do not dismay.
