Speed skater Apolo Anton Ohno looks leaner and fitter than ever thanks to his intense training program, which includes working out up to 12 hours a day.
"With the Winter Olympics just weeks away, the final stage of my training is coming to an end," Ohno, 27, writes on Health.com.
He adds: "I am focusing on recovery, getting mentally prepared, and fine-tuning my technique."
'NO STONE UNTURNED'
Apolo, who has won 5 Olympic medals (two gold, one silver, two bronze) during his career, says he feels optimistic about the upcoming Vancouver Games because he has trained "above and beyond and left no stone unturned" in his preparation.
"Nobody will ever outwork me in my sport," says Ohno.
For the past few months, Apolo has been doing thrice-daily workouts totaling 12 hours a day, lifting weights, doing skating drills, running, cycling and hiking.
He has lost weight, and looks leaner than ever, hoping to convert his lighter mass into extra speed in the rink.
"Fitness is so important and being healthy is a big part of who I am," he says.
Adds Ohno: "I’m also focusing on getting plenty of rest, which is great for me mentally and physically. I can feel my energy levels rise, even thought part of it is probably adrenaline. I always get excited leading up to big competitions."
AIMING FOR A RECORD
Ohno, who is tied with (long-track) speed skater Eric Heiden for most career medals at the Winter Olympics by an American man, has been the reigning U.S. speed-skating champion since 2001, and won the world championships in 2008.
The 2010 Winter Olympics begins Feb. 12 in Vancouver. Apolo's first race is the 1500 meters, which begins Feb. 13.
