There is an old saying, “If it’s not baroque, don’t fix it”. Apollo’s Fire (the most sought after premier baroque ensemble in the world) from time to time ignores this adage. Last year it was Irish tunes being played in a barn loft. This year, they have decided to resurrect an immensely popular show that they first performed in 2010 that drew over 1000 fans to Cain Park.
“Come to the River, An Early American Gathering” is a trip back in time to when the area that we now lived was regarded as “The Wilderness”. The show features Jeannette Sorrell and the Apollo’s Fire Countryside Players in a covered-wagon ride through early rural America. The songs are tales of love, death, murder and salvation and include a collection of Appalachian Ballads, shape-note hymns and old fashioned fiddle tunes guaranteed to stir your soul.
The cast includes virtuoso “fiddler” Olivier Brault, pioneer style guitarist Paul Shipper, electrifying hammered dulcimer player Tina Bergmann, wooden flute player Kathie Stewart, cello with attitude Rene’ Schiffer and harpsichordist Jeannette Sorrell who are joined by singers/actors Molly Quinn, Amanda Powell, Ross Hauck and Paul Shipper for a sampling of music straight from the barn dances, murderous ballads and revival meetings down by the river. The inspiration for this program came to Jeanette Sorrell as reminiscences of growing up in the rural South.
Apollo’s Fire will present one local performance at the Morley Music Hall on Lake Erie College campus (Painesville, Ohio) before embarking on its second national “Come to the River” tour! A post-concert Q&A with the musicians will immediately follow the performance. The concert at Morley Hall is co-presented with Lake Erie College thanks to a generous grant from the Lake-Geauga Fund of the Cleveland Foundation.
