Performances: April 25 - 28
We come to the end of another Apollo’s Fire season and as with all their performances, these promise to be delightful as well. To close the season, Apollo’s Fire and Music Director Jeannette Sorrell will be joining with internationally acclaimed soprano Amanda Forsythe for an evening of sparkling arias and orchestral brilliance.
The program was inspired by the famous friendship between “Papa Haydn” and his young protégé Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Included in this varied program will be selections from Haydn’s “Sturm und Drang” period (stormy, agitate music) that will segue into the laughter and tears of Mozart’s early operas. It promises to be an evening of contrasts between the two polar opposite personalities.
Amanda Forsythe is known for her “effortless and subtle vocal artistry” (The Boston Globe) and her “wonderful agility and silvery top notes” (Opera News). Fresh from triumphs at Covent Garden in London, Forsythe returns to Cleveland to continue her much-praised series of collaborations with Jeannette Sorrell and Apollo’s Fire. Forsythe and Sorrell have previously collaborated on two acclaimed CD recordings – Handel’s Messiah and a disc of Mozart.
Conductor Jeannette Sorrell has been called “an outstanding Mozartian… Her Mozart achieves a near-perfect combination of real dramatic cogency and the ability to sing….” (Fanfare Record Magazine).
Contrasting AF’s recent chamber offerings, this evening features an orchestra of 28 musicians. This program offers a rare chance to hear Mozart and Haydn on period instruments. All of the players are period-instrument specialists, assembled from across North America.
