It’s finally 2012, and you know what that means: The world will end in December. Okay, probably not -- but it would be a scary thought if you actually believed it, right? So it’s no surprise that a potential apocalypse has been the subject of countless horror movies, even before 2012 was in the public’s mind. Even if you believe mankind will live to see 2013, you might want to get your hands on one of these apocalyptic horror films before the year’s end. You know, just in case.
zombie movies: Zombies are one of the most popular monsters in the world of apocalyptic movies. George A. Romero’s Night of the Living Dead series and his later works, found footage movie Diary of the Dead and its sequel, Survival of the Dead, are some of the most well-known. Horror comedy Zombieland also features characters wandering through a post-apocalyptic America. But the apocalypse isn’t just confined to the States -- British movie 28 Days Later uses the same subject matter.

Phase 7: In the Argentinean film Phase 7, the apocalypse hits hard for a man and his pregnant wife. Fine time to be pregnant, right?
vampire movies: Not all movie vampires are sparkly and attractive. Apocalyptic movies like Stake Land, I Am Legend, and last summer’s Priest use the creatures in lieu of zombies as their post-apocalyptic monsters of choice. And these vampires are much more interested in drinking human blood than going to high school or dating Kristen Stewart.
pre-apocalyptic movies: There’s nothing worse than that feeling of impending disaster. You know, that idea that the events recently set in motion could lead to an apocalypse. Last summer’s origin story Rise of the Planet of the Apes set in motion the events that eventually led to apes taking over the earth, and in every original and remake of movies like War of the Worlds and The Day the Earth Stood Still, aliens threaten to take over the planet.
Hattiesburg residents: Priest and Rise of the Planet of the Apes are available for rental at the outdoor Redbox at Corner Market on Old Highway 11. Rise is also available at Target on Highway 98.
post-apocalyptic movies: Even if the audience doesn’t know how the world got to its post-apocalypse state, they can still follow a characters’ struggle. In addition to the vampire movies listed above,The Road, based on Cormac McCarthy’s bestselling novel, is regarded as horror by many people for its bleak outlook on life after the end of the world and the many dangers that the characters face. But it’s not the only book-to-movie adaptation with that slant. In the upcoming teen thriller The Hunger Games, North America has collapsed and been replaced with one big country called Panem. To keep the citizens in line, the government of Panem forces 24 children each year to fight to the death until only one is left. Oh, and the entire thing is televised and watching it is required by law. Yikes...zombies are starting to sound really good right about now, no?
