'Apes' tops 'Purge' to win weekend box office; 'Hercules,' 'Lucy' open Friday

‘Dawn of the Planet of the Apes’ held off three newcomers to top the domestic weekend box office again, according to industry estimates reported by movie tracking site Box Office Mojo on Sunday.

The ‘Apes’ sequel finished first for the second weekend in a row, grossing $36.2 million in ticket sales from Friday to Sunday and pushing its total to $139.2 million since opening July 11.

Horror sequel ‘The Purge: Anarchy’ led the list of newcomers, opening at No. 2 with $29.8 million. ‘Anarchy’ fell short of its predecessor, ‘The Purge,’ which opened with $34 million in 2013.

Animated adventure comedy sequel ‘Planes: Fire & Rescue’ debuted at No. 3 with $17.5 million. ‘Fire & Rescue’ also fell short of its predecessor, ‘Planes,’ which opened with $22.2 million in 2013.

R-rated comedy ‘Sex Tape,’ starring Cameron Diaz, opened at No. 4 with an underwhelming $14.6 million.

Sci-fi action sequel ‘Transformers: Age of Extinction’ dropped three spots to No. 5 in its fourth weekend, earning $9.8 million for a total of $227 million since opening June 27.

FRIDAY’S NATIONWIDE RELEASES

‘And So It Goes,’ starring Michael Douglas and Diane Keaton, is a romantic dramedy about a self-centered realtor who enlists his neighbor's help when he’s left in charge of a granddaughter he never knew existed. Rated PG-13. Watch the official trailer here.

‘Hercules,’ starring Dwayne Johnson, is an action adventure about the Greek demigod whose sword is tested when a king and his daughter seek the legendary hero’s aid in defeating a tyrannical warlord. Rated PG-13. Watch the official trailer here.

‘Lucy,’ starring Scarlett Johansson and Morgan Freeman, is a sci-fi action thriller about a woman who gains the ability to use 100 percent of her brain’s capacity, giving her superhuman abilities. Rated R. Watch the official trailer here.

TUESDAY’S DVD/BLU-RAY RELEASES

'Cesar Chavez' is a biographical drama about the civil rights activist and labor organizer. Only 40 percent reviews were positive on movie review site Rotten Tomatoes, which said the film is 'too in awe of its subject's great works to present him as a human being.' Rated PG-13. Heaven is for Real,’ starring Greg Kinnear, is a Christian drama based on the true story of a young boy who claims to have visited Heaven during a near-death experience. Only 46 percent of reviews were positive on Rotten Tomatoes, which said the film ‘boasts a well-written screenplay and a talented cast, but overextends itself with heavy-handed sequences depicting concepts it could have trusted the audience to take on faith.’ Rated PG. ‘Sabotage,’ starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, is an action crime drama about members of an elite drug enforcement task force who find themselves in danger after robbing a drug cartel safe house. Only 20 percent of reviews were positive on Rotten Tomatoes, which said the film ‘boasts one of Arnold Schwarzenegger's finer post-political performances, but it's wasted in a movie driven by grueling violence that punishes seemingly without purpose.’ Rated R. Tyler Perry's 'The Single Moms Club' is a dramedy about five struggling single mothers from different walks of life who decide to form a support group and help each other overcome life's obstacles. Only 16 percent of reviews were positive on Rotten Tomatoes, which said the film relies 'on heavy-handed melodrama at the expense of sensible characters or absorbing story lines.' ‘Transcendence,’ starring Johnny Depp, is a sci-fi thriller about a scientist in the field of artificial intelligence whose consciousness is uploaded into a machine, an experiment with dangerous implications. Only 19 percent of reviews were positive on Rotten Tomatoes, which said the film’s ‘thought-provoking themes exceed the movie's narrative grasp.’ Rated PG-13. Watch the official trailer here.
