'Apes' tops box office; 'Planes' and 'Purge' sequels, 'Sex Tape' open Friday

The sequel ‘Dawn of the Planet of the Apes’ knocked ‘Transformers: Age of Extinction’ from the top of the domestic weekend box office, according to industry figures reported by movie tracking site Box Office Mojo on Monday.

The only new nationwide release of the weekend, ‘Dawn’ grossed $72.6 million in ticket sales from Friday to Sunday, easily besting the $54.8-million opening of ‘Rise of the Planet of the Apes’ in 2011.

After two weekends at No. 1, ‘Transformers: Age of Extinction’ dropped to No. 2 in its third weekend, earning $16.3 million for a total of $208.8 million since opening June 27.

‘Age of Extinction’ is the sixth film to crack the $200-million mark domestically in 2014, moving into the top five highest-grossing movies of the year by passing ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2’ ($201.5 million).

Melissa McCarthy comedy ‘Tammy’ fell one spot to No. 3 in its second weekend, earning $12.5 million for a total of $56.9 million since opening July 2.

Action comedy sequel ‘22 Jump Street’ also slipped one notch to No. 4 in its fifth weekend, earning $6.5 million for a total of $171.7 million since opening June 13.

Animated fantasy adventure sequel ‘How to Train Your Dragon 2’ remained at No. 5 in its fifth weekend, earning $6 million for a total of $152.2 million since opening June. 13.

‘Planes: Fire & Rescue’ is the animated adventure comedy sequel to 2013’s ‘Planes.’ In ‘Fire & Rescue,’ Dusty learns his engine is damaged, threatening his racing career, so he joins forces with an aerial team to battle a massive wildfire. Rated PG. Watch the official trailer here.

‘The Purge: Anarchy’ is the action horror sequel to 2013’s surprise hit ‘The Purge.’ In ‘Anarchy,’ a couple with car problems, a man on a mission to avenge his son’s death, and a mother and daughter on the run meet up and try to survive the night in Los Angeles during the annual Purge when all crime, including murder, is legal for 12 hours. ‘Sex Tape’ is a raunchy comedy starring Cameron Diaz and Jason Segel as a married couple that makes a sex video only to discover it missing the next day, leading them on a frantic search to find the video before it gets distributed on the Internet. Rated R. Watch the official trailer here.

TUESDAY’S DVD/BLU-RAY RELEASE

‘Rio 2’ is the animated adventure comedy sequel to 2011’s ‘Rio.’ In the sequel, the macaw Blu and his family journey to the Amazon to find more of their kind and end up on a wild adventure in the jungle. Only 46 percent of reviews were positive on movie review site Rotten Tomatoes, which said the sequel is ‘even busier, more colorful, and ultimately more exhausting for viewers outside the youthful target demographic.’ Rated G.
