There were three new movies to come out this week but none of them were able to beat out Planet of the Apes for the top spot, despite all three of them hitting double digits.
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes has a solid second week at the box office bringing in an estimated $36 million. The movie is doing far better then many other sequels that it’s even gotten a 91% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes (a hard feat to do). The movie should be able to surpass it’s $170 million budget next week and look to try and gain some profit.
The three movies that came out this week did well. The Purge: Anarchy continues to have success as it’s able to bring in an estimated $28.3 million over the weekend. The movie didn’t quite hit the opening that The Purge made (it made $34 million) but it’s still nothing to look past.
Disney’s Planes 2: Fire & Rescue has a good opening bringing in an estimated $15 million. The movie has been getting good reviews so far and the lack of competition for family films may helps this movie do well at the box office.
The last movie to come out this week is the comedy Sex Tape which took in an estimated $15 million. The movie had high hopes at the box office as it had A-list comedic actors Jason Segal and Cameron Diaz starring in it, but the movie is getting mixed reviews, taking away from it’s box office.
Rounding out the top five is Transformers: Age of Extinction which took in an estimated $10 million over the weekend. The movie surpassed it’s budget of $210 million last week and it has a long way to go to match the other three Transformer movies.
For the rest of the box office, you can go here.
The rest of the month looks to be slow at the box office so Planet of the Apes will probably stay there until August when it looks like a few good movies are set to come out.
