Apa Sherpa, an extremely accomplished mountaineer, who also holds the record for climbing Mount Everest at an astounding 21 times, will be sharing his experiences this Thursday, November 17th at 7:00 p.m. Apa will be joined by his colleague and friend, Terrell Pool. The location is at the Huntsman Cancer Institute, on the University of Utah campus, in the 6th floor Auditorium. The event is free and the public is welcome.
On May 11th, 2011, Apa Sherpa topped his own record of climbing Mount Everest making it his 21st time to summit this majestic peak. His brother, Arita Sherpa, reached the summit with him along with two other Sherpas and others from different countries. This climb was more than just breaking a record. Apa has dedicated the last four summits on Mount Everest to helping clean up the mountain with the Eco Everest Expedition, sponsored by the Asian Trekking company.
This last expedition was quite the journey for Apa Sherpa as it not only included cleaning up discarded waste such as oxygen cylinders, gas canisters, ropes and torn tents, but it also involved a medical emergency of Terrell Pool. Pool had to be evacuated via helicopter from Namche due to high altitude cerebral edema. Another challenge involved was reaching Camp 4 only to have to turn around and return to Base Camp due to high winds. Despite the challenges faced on this excursion, Apa continued on with his incredible strength and humbleness to reach the summit.
You won’t want to miss out on this evening with Apa Sherpa and Terrell Pool. You will have the opportunity to hear the experience of their latest excursion, firsthand, and may gain insight as to what motivated Apa Sherpa to climb Mount Everest every year since 1990. If there’s anyone that knows what to expect and what you’ll face while climbing Everest, Apa is your man.
