If you are into aviation and want to see aircraft of all types, then San Marcos Municipal Airport (KHYI) is your place. The Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA) is holding their first of a number of national member fly-ins at Redbird Skyport. The event will take place Saturday April 26th from 8:30 AM until 4 PM. Close to 400 planes will be landing in San Marcos with another large amount at nearby New Braunfels Airport, which is serving as a relief airport. People who are interested in becoming pilots or are already taking flying classes are encouraged to come visit. There will be a "Learn to Fly" area for those who may want to get a career in aviation. This is a good place to start and to gather information on what you may need. Redbird Skyport, the host fixed base operator (FBO), is a state of the art facility with a superb professional staff and they are eager and excited to host such a convention. Among all the aircraft on display is a Boeing B-17 WWII bomber named Aluminum Overcast, based in Oshkosh Wisconsin. Their crews are offering rides (for a donation) thru the show.
The Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association was founded in 1939 and as of 2012 it had close to 385,000 members, making it the largest general aviation association in the world. For more information as well as a calendar of future events, please contact them at www.aopa.org.
