According to the TODAY/AOL body image survey, released Monday, when it comes to the physical imperfections of adults, both men and women worry far more about their flabby bellies than any other area of their bodies.
This survey found that 69% of women, and 52% of men worry about their flabby stomachs. Far behind in second place, at 24%, men worry about loosing hair as 40% of women worry about skin problems. Skin is third for men at 23%, while thighs are the third largest physical image issue for ladies, at 36%.
AOL was surprised that bellies even came in first, but the engineers from the Adult Exercise Efficiency Project, a non-profit fitness and exercise science study, that traces the forces of exercise through the body, were not at all surprised.
This morning (2/27/14) they explained their new findings that would have easily predicted those results. Their statement:
"The core muscles are by far the hardest muscles for traditional exercise methods to work. This is because the motion resistance force needed to work muscles in the center of the body, enters the body at the shoulders, ankles or wrists, nowhere close to the groin or abdominal muscles."
They continued. "So for the motion resistance to reach these muscles it must first cascade through a series of kinetic energy transfers that happen at each and every spinal disk and joint in-between the belly muscles and the area the resistance energy entered the adult body".
"Human Joints and disks are jam packed with nerves to let people know when they are being pushed to hard, to help prevent damage.
Because so many parts other than just muscles are forced to handle all the invisible forces of traditional methods, they become excruciatingly painful for average, older or weaker adult to do, so they grow flabby bellies instead."
"This will continue as long as exercise and fitness science experts keep only promoting exercise methods that use the skeleton to carry all of the exercise forces, to and from targeted muscles".
After adapting engineering sciences to map the forces of modern exercises through the human body, they came up with the idea of using this to design new exercise methods that use anything other than joints bones and vertebra to oppose (fight) muscle contractions.
This lead to their discovery of literally hundreds of ways to do this, thus saving adult joints and disks for doing other activities.
All of these new methods share a common denominator, they all aim motion resistance across bones and the spine, instead of up and down them as virtually all exercises always have.
This unintentionally became the first total fitness and exercise science rethink, of how to exercise only adults, in 3000 years. They call the science 'ARF', for 'Aimed Resistance Force Exercise'.
By only allowing stout exercise forces to move across the spine and extremity bones, these exercises hinder targeted muscle contractions first. Traditional exercises send the resistance forces up and down the spine, and extremity bones first. This causes a painful kinetic carnival of force transfers at each joint and disk along the way.
Because traditional methods work the skeleton far harder than the skeletal attached muscles, so the older people become the harder, more painful and damaging to joints and disks traditional exercises are. ARF can end this 300 year old problem of keeping adults fit.
Aimed Resistance Force exercises can allow almost any older adult to exert their abdominal muscles, up to hundreds of times harder than their disks or joints can handle using traditional exercise methods.
A 2010 study from the University of Iowa, indicates how likely less than 1% of American's over age 35 are physically fit. This survey also exposes why most adults worry about their flabby bellies, because they are only offered horribly inefficient, tortuously painful methods to exercise their core muscles.
ARF cannot force average adults to become and stay fit, but by taking their joints or spinal disks out of full exertion exercise, it gives them the first full strength exercise option ever, that is maintainable.
