Today marks the third day of filming in downtown Savannah, Georgia for the new Sponge Bob Square Pants movie. Filming for an elaborate chase scene through downtown Savannah began on Monday. The scene being filmed features Antonio Banderas, playing the part of a pirate and driving a pirate-ship-on-wheels, chasing a gray sedan down Broughton Street, downtown Savannah's main shopping district.
Although police closed Broughton Street to through traffic the sidewalks, and thus local businesses, remain open. This gives tourists and locals alike a front row seat to the making of a major Hollywood movie. Visitors can watch as a black camera car films Banderas performing his high-speed, swash buckling maneuvers. Visitors can then browse the local shops or grab a bite to eat during the long breaks between shooting scenes.
Visitors should not miss The Savannah Bee Company's new store on Broughton Street where they can sample many different types of artisan honey as well as experience the new mead bar. Another must-visit is Leopold's, a movie-themed ice cream shop owned by veteran movie producer Stratton Leopold who executive produced such hits as Mission Impossible III and The Sum of All Fears.
Filming for Sponge Bob 2 began in September on nearby Tybee Island and continues for another month. The film is tentatively scheduled for release in Feburary 2015.
