Mars One, a non-profit organization with the mission to create a permanent settlement on Mars by 2023 envisions making the final decision on the participants via a reality TV show, reports NBC News on September 10. The premise of the show appears to be to select the lucky winners who will earn their spot on a four-man mission to Mars.
Over 2700 potential participants signed up and paid the registration fee to get their name in the running for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Round one is complete and the current registrants will now go before a selection committee and provide their medical data.
Once the selection committee identifies a core group of contestants, Mars One hopes to put the contestants through two rounds of reality TV to raise money for the mission and narrow the field of applicants, says NBC News. Selected applicants will earn a one-way ticket to Mars with the expectation that they become part of the first permanent settlement on Mars.
No TV deals are in the works, yet, but Mars One is hopeful that interest in their mission will land them a deal with a major network in the next two or three years.
Those who missed the initial application process can rest assured that further recruitment programs for follow up missions will be available for those wishing to be part of the settlement of Mars. According to the Mars One press release, the second round of applications will begin in 2014.
Mars One envisions forming six to 10 teams of four who will train for seven years before choosing who will be awarded the one-way tickets to Mars. The final team is expected to settle on Mars and live there for the rest of their lives.
The cost of the initial mission to send a four-man team to Mars is estimated at $6 million.
