The anti-science group Citizens for Objective Public Education, a nonprofit group based in Peck, Kansas, has filed a federal lawsuit seeking to block adoption of the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). Attorney John Calvert is targeting the Kansas State Board of Education, all ten of its members, Education commissioner Diane DeBacker, and the Kansas Department of Education.
Calvert, coincidentally, is also founder of the Intelligent Design Network. This group continues to present the same tired arguments about the nature of life and the nature of science; despite the fact that such arguments have been discredited by scientists for years. Calvert and his followers have little understanding of real science and even less desire to learn.
Calvert’s organizations seek only to dilute science education in the name of “religious freedom”; and to inject religion cloaked as science (such as “intelligent design” and other monikers) into the curriculum. You’d think an attorney would understand the multiple court cases which have already ruled these practices unconstitutional. Apparently, Calvert & Co are not only willfully blind to science but also willfully blind to the law.
The court’s dismissal of this latest charade, and Calvert’s subsequent cries of an “activist judiciary”, are as predictable as the ongoing evolution of life on Earth.
