Anti-gay customers refused to tip an openly gay server at a Carrabba's recently. According to a report from late Thursday (Oct. 24), it all took place at the Italian restaurant in Overland Park, KS. Using backhanded compliments, the customers left a note on the back of their bill blasting a 20-year-old waiter for his sexual orientation. The story has now gone viral, with many people showing their support for what this man has had to go through.
A report from KCTV5 states that the note read, "Thank you for your service, it was excellent. That being said, we cannot in good conscience tip you, for your homosexual lifestyle is an affront to GOD. (Homosexual slur) do not share in the wealth of GOD, and you will not share in ours," the customer wrote. "We hope you will see the tip your (homosexual slur) choices made you lose out on, and plan accordingly. It is never too late for GOD's love, but none shall be spared for (homosexual slur). May GOD have mercy on you."
Some commenters on initial reports of the story felt that these people were just trying to get out of tipping while others felt that these specific anti-gay customers had crossed a line with the message. It has led to many people trying to start a campaign to flood the restaurant with supportive customers on Friday (Oct. 25). The restaurant itself has also released a statement saying that the company does not tolerate discrimination from either employees or guests.
As for the server that had to deal with these comments, he and his mother (who also works there) have been referring questions from the media to management. Talking about customers publicly in media stories like these has gotten staff fired in the past, so they appear to be avoiding getting put in a position like that.
