After being admitted to a Pretoria hospital back in June for a recurring lung infection -- and staying there for three months -- Mandela was released in September and began medical care from home, The Huffington Post reported.

"The founding president of our democratic nation, has departed... Our nation has lost its greatest son. Our people have lost a father," South African President Jacob Zuma told CBC News.

Back in 1998, Mandela received an honorary Companion of the Order of Canada, and in 2001 he was deemed an honorary Canadian Citizen. He often called Canada his "home away from home" as the nation supported him in his fight to end apartheid and call for the use of constitutional democracy in South Africa, the Daily Brew reported.

In 1994, his fight was a success as he became South Africa's first black president. He served one 5-year term.

"We saw in him what we seek in ourselves. And in him we saw so much of ourselves," Zuma told CBC News. "Nelson Mandela brought us together and it is together that we will bid him farewell."
