Those who have the slightest interest in the Hoboken dining scene know Anthony David's and know it well. Usually I would place myself in that category without the slightest bit of hesitation, but apparently I've been living under a rock for the past, oh, three and a half years. I say this because I've only been to the place once for dinner when I first moved to the area. I live only two blocks away. After last weekend, I gave my wrist a quick slap, decided to make this local favorite the subject of my first review, and promised myself I would return for many, many more Sunday brunches.
The brunch menu offers traditional morning favorites like steak and eggs and housemade pancakes, a variety of omelettes, eggs benedict four ways, and a selection of salads and sandwiches. If you find yourself in need of some hair of the dog that bit, you'll need to bring your own: the restaurant is byob, but the orange juice is freshly squeezed and you can make your mimosas as strong as you please. Give the host your name, take a short walk to the liquor store around the corner during your wait, and pick up a bottle of bubbly. Your server will bring champagne glasses and an ice bucket to your table before you think to ask for them.
Prices range from $9.95 for a standard plate of eggs, sausage, toast, and homefries to $15.50 for crab cakes benedict. Whatever you choose, be sure not to leave without trying the side of challah french toast. Deeply moist on the inside, lightly crisp on the outside, and served with a small pitcher of real maple syrup, I'd confidently declare it the best in Hoboken.
To put it simply, Anthony David's combines a perfectly charming and intimate atmosphere, unpretentious service, and straightforward, fantastic food to produce an award-winning spot that keeps loyal fans coming back week after week. Suffice it to say, after last Sunday I believe I've officially joined the club.
Additional: The Dining Room at Anthony David's can be reserved for private parties. Five course tasting menu is offered every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday for $35. Owner and Chef Anthony Pino may be booked for chef visits and demonstrations. Catering and special events also available.
