More than 140 people spent a couple of hours honoring Anthem area businesses and networking with others at a holiday function in December, 2013. The Anthem North Gateway Chamber (www.northgatewaychamber.org) partnered with the Greater Phoenix Chamber of Commerce in the event. Anthem presented its winner of the annual Business Person of the Year Award and the Anthem Community Council presented its 2013 business awards.

The Anthem Chamber’s Business Person of the Year is Nanette McClelland-Miller of State Farm Insurance. She was nominated for her commitment to building a successful business and her support for the community. She moved her office to a storefront location at Fry’s Shopping Center at Daisy Mountain Drive and Gavilan Peak Parkway on Anthem. Each year she and her husband celebrate their Louisiana heritage with a Mardi Gras fundraiser which has raised more than $80,000 for a number of causes. The next fundraiser is March 1, 2014.

The Anthem Community Council presented its inaugural business awards in two categories: best exterior commercial property improvement and excellence in community service. Rose Umess of Creative Castle Preschool and Kindergarten won for Best Exterior Commercial Property Improvement and Andrew Zychowski of Andrew Z diamonds and Fine Jewelry won for Excellence in Community Service.

Zychowski’s community involvement includes donating to Pro-Musica Arizona, hosting an annual Secret Santa program, contributing to various council events and demonstrating consistent support to the community. Creative Castle was recognized for turning a ½ acre parcel filled with debris and weeds into an outdoor playground.
