Answers: Why ‘Brit Coms’ MIA on APTV?

An inquiry to Alabama Public Television (APTV) in reference to the disappearance of the “Brit Coms” from APTV’s schedule in January 2013 received the following response from APTV on Jan. 24, 2013.

The broadcast licenses for the British comedies programs on APT expired at the end of December. Due to the high cost of these programs – and the requests we’ve had from many viewers for an update to this lineup – we would like to offer viewers a chance to make suggestions to guide our future plans. It would be possible (and least expensive) for APT to license “Are You Being Served” and “Keeping Up Appearances” again. It is also possible for APT to buy programs we’ve aired in the past, including “As Time Goes By,” “To the Manor Born,” “Last of the Summer Wine,” “Fawlty Towers” and “Vicar of Dibley.” There are also quite a few BBC series we’ve never aired. Once we’ve heard what viewers would like to see, we will determine the cost of those programs and begin finding the resources needed to buy them.

Meanwhile, Saturday nights will become a new destination for another British programming favorite, Masterpiece Mystery! APT will begin airing past episodes of Masterpiece Mystery on Saturday evenings in January. These programs have many fans in Alabama, and because they are part of the PBS package, we can air them without any extra costs.

We do look forward to bringing British comedies back to APT as soon as we are able, and we would like to hear from you regarding the programs that you’d like to see. If you have any suggestions, please let me know – I’ll be sure to pass them along.

All the best,

The solution is making contributions to APTV. That can be done here.
