Another Utah soldier killed in Afghanistan helicopter attack

The second Utah military family in less than a week was given the worst news possible; their son would not be returning home from his duties. Jared Day, of Taylorsville, was among those killed in the August 6th gunning down of a U.S. Chinook helicopter in Afghanistan by insurgent forces. Another Utahn, Navy SEAL Jason Workman, also died in the attack.

Day, 28, was part of the Navy Special Warfare Development Group. He would have turned 29 this month. Jared joined the Navy in 2002 and has served honorably. His body, along with those of the other U.S. servicemen who lost their lives that day in Afghanistan, was brought to Dover Air Force Base in Delaware for return to his family. The fallen were honored by President Barack Obama and other top-tier officials in an untelevised ceremony.

People close to the Day family have said that Jared loved what he did, and that they are proud of his sacrifice. Understandably, they are also heartbroken and have expressed a wish for the public to respect their privacy.
