Another toddler has been shot and killed as he sat in his stroller. Where has the morality gone?
First we heard the story of Antonio Santiago, out of Brunswick, Georgia, whose mother was approached by two teenagers and asked for money. When she said she didn't have any one of the teenagers shot her son in the face as retribution. It was 9 o'clock in the morning. The boys were 17 and 14. It was a Thursday when school was in session but these boys chose not to go to school. They weren't the only people out. A nearby woman heard the shots and called 911. She was so distraught she gave her phone to a man walking his dog who confirmed to 911 where the baby was shot and that he was not breathing only moments after the crime. CNN reports the man also had heard a shot. De'Marquise Elkins, 17 and the 14 year old, Dominique Lang, were found with the assistance of Sherry West, the toddler's mother, and others in the area providing a description of the two.
On August 30, FoxNews reported that De'Marquise Elkins was found guilty of eleven counts. His mother was also found guilty of tampering with evidence. Elkins defense included claiming the mother was involved in the baby's death. Lang, the accomplice, testified against Elkins that he was the shooter. Elkins defense team indicated maybe it was Lang's uncle who was supposedly in the general neighborhood that morning. There has been no known evidence of remorse. There is no concept for why shooting a toddler makes any sense for the few dollars that might have been in this woman's purse. The man's mother is not showing any remorse by tampering with evidence although it was information from her and Elkins' sister which lead police to the murder weapon found in a pond.
The city proper of Brunswick is small, just over 15,000 people. The kind of town where people would know their neighbors and many in town. That didn't stop these two from killing their "neighbor". The child's father, Louis Santiago, and mother, Sherry West, have lost their child.
Now, on September 1st the New York Daily News reports another one year old, Antiq Hennis, was gunned down as he sat in his stroller. Shot in the head in Brownsville, Brooklyn. The parents, from Trinidad, indicate that the boy's father was the intended target. Someone with more than 20 arrests on his record and indication of a previous altercation resulting in the shooter's desire to pinpoint the father. The time was about 7:20pm in the summer so should have still been light out. The father was with his family- the mother and baby. It was no matter to the shooters, they just started shooting and the only one they hit was the baby. Where is the conscience? There is none when shooting into a crowd or small group of people. The stroller would have been easily visible and, of course, any one should expect a child to be in it.
A moral code is being broken across this country. It is one of the great devastations of our society, the lack of respect for human life, the lack of care for children, the complete lack of conscience or social ethic that leads to the senseless death of these little ones.
