Yet another shooting has been reported, this time from Houston, Texas. It's quite convenient that while Democrats in D.C. work to get gun control legislation passed that all these stories about shootings are coming out. That must mean that we're experiencing an unusually severe increase in shootings, right?
In 2011, the Federal Bureau of Investigations reported that there were 8,583 murders resulting from firearms use. That averages out to just over 23 shootings a day. Furthermore, preliminary data from the FBI for 2012 shows that murders are actually down by nearly 2%.
So what's the deal? Why is the media reporting more shootings?
If you want to understand why the media is focusing on something, it's a sure bet that Congress is up to something. Right now, both houses of Congress are inundated with numerous gun control and gun protection legislation. There is also the UN Small Arms Treaty that President Obama has been itching to get ratified.
