On Wednesday night, gunmen murdered Nuevo Laredo Police Chief Manuel Farfan Carriola shortly after he left police headquarters. His bodyguards and his personal secretary were also killed in the attack.
Carriola, a retired army brigadier general, had only been on for 33 days. When he took office, he vowed to end the "cruel, unjust and difficult" violence being perpetuated by the drug cartels.
In 2005, Nuevo Laredo’s police chief was murdered after only seven hours in office.
The city is located in the northern Mexican state of Tamaulipas, and shares a border with the United States, with Laredo, Texas just on the other side.
The area is being fought over by the rival Gulf and Zetas Cartels for the lucrative smuggling routes into the U.S.
