For a second time at Sochi, Darya Domracheva of Belarus has taken the Gold. Her victory this time was in the Women’s 15 kilometer Individual Biathlon. She won the Pursuit event on Tuesday. Although she missed one target in the shooting, her blisteringly fast skiing enabled her to win the Gold. Her time was 43:19.6.
Selina Gasparin of Switzerland shot 20 for 20 to take the Silver medal. It is the first time a biathlete from Switzerland has won a medal. She was 1 minute, 15.7 seconds behind Domracheva with no misses. Gasparin is almost single-handedly responsible for putting biathlon in the public eye in Switzerland, which made her Silver medal even more of an achievement.
Another Belarusian, Nadezhda Skardino, took the Bronze. This is the first time Belarus has taken two medals in the same Winter Games event. She shot the course clean and had a time of 44:57.8.
Marksmanship can make or break the competitors in the Individual event. Each miss adds one minute to the biathlete’s time. Some who skied well were knocked down in the standing because of missed shots.
Team USA’s Hannah Dreissigacker finished 23rd with only two misses. Susan Dunklee had five misses, which put her 34th. Sara Studebaker came in 55th after four misses. Lanny Barnes had three misses and finished at 64th place.
The next biathlon event will be the Men's 15km Mass Start, which takes place Sunday.
